Started from a genuine love of great coffee and years of hands-on experience around the world, this Tunbridge Wells roastery has grown from humble beginnings into a space of their very own. They are a lovely example of how important it is to stay true to your craft and while building something special right here in the community. It's such a pleasure to introduce Michelle and Giancarlo - the family behind @_penelope.coffee
Tell us about your journey from the business idea to launching the business.
The business idea grew naturally via Giancarlo's passion for coffee. From immersing ourselves in the Melbourne coffee scene - owning a cafe, learning roasting in Australia + New Zealand, gaining qualifications in the industry in Australia + Italy, then spending time working on coffee farms in Costa Rica... the idea was sparked and moving around for a few years, before we had our first daughter, Penelope - which gave the determination to make his own way in the industry.
What's been your biggest achievement since starting your business?
Opening our doors to the roastery at Chapman Way in Tunbridge Wells. We went from renting time on someone else's roasting machine, to setting our own up within our own space, presenting the start of our vision. Also, being awarded Highly Commended at the Tunbridge Wells Business Awards in Nov was a highlight!
What inspired you to start the business?
Becoming a father was the catalyst. Building a future for our family where we can travel to origin to explore coffee, work directly with farmers and build relationships.
What does the future look like? Any events or news we should keep an eye for?
We've just started to develop our space and use it to it's capacity. We'd love to offer outdoor seating in Summer + tidy up the car parking. Add to our food offering. And we'd love to organise public cupping sessions, for coffee tasting and exploration.
What message would you like to send to our community of small business owners?
Not to be waived by what others are doing, don't lower your integrity to fit to a mould, stay in your lane, do what you do well & the results will come.
